Africa is accelerating its digital transformation, yet it remains heavily dependent on technologies, software, data centres and platforms largely designed and controlled outside the continent. This dependence creates a strategic vulnerability to cyberattacks, data leaks and the loss of digital sovereignty.
Consequences
- Greater exposure of sensitive citizen and institutional data;
- Technological dependence that limits control over critical infrastructure;
- Economic and security vulnerability in the face of cyber crises;
- Constraints on the development of a competitive African digital ecosystem.
Operational solutions
- Develop sovereign digital infrastructure: data centres, African cloud services and Internet exchange points;
- Strengthen national cybersecurity capabilities and incident response centres;
- Invest heavily in African talent in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and strategic technologies;
- Promote African technology solutions and regional partnerships;
- Harmonise legal frameworks and cybersecurity policies at continental level.
Digital autonomy is no longer optional; it is a strategic necessity. Without robust cybersecurity, there can be no digital sovereignty, digital trust or genuinely sustainable economic development for Africa.
